Why We Aren't 100% Linen

Linen is the quintessential fabric of summer—light, breathable, and with that effortlessly cool je ne sais quoi lived-in look. You know, when it’s just worn enough to be crisp but still feels supple. When we started designing the Terra collection, we wanted to capture everything we love about linen—its natural charm, durability, and softness—but without the downsides that come with 100% linen.

So why didn’t we go for pure linen? Let’s break it down.

What is Linen?

Linen is one of the oldest and most beloved fabrics in the world, made from the fibres of the flax plant. Known for its lightweight and breathable qualities, linen has always been a summer favourite, keeping you cool and comfortable even in warm weather.

There’s something magical about how linen feels better the more you wear it—softening over time and getting more comfortable with every wash. But as much as we love it, linen comes with some quirks. It can be a bit stiff when it’s new, and, let’s be honest, it wrinkles like crazy. While that’s part of the charm for some, we wanted to create a fabric that still felt like linen but without the high maintenance.

Benefits of Linen

1. Breathability: Linen lets air flow naturally, making it the perfect fabric for hot, sticky days. It also wicks away moisture, keeping you cool and dry.

2. Durability: It is one of the toughest natural fibres, so when you care for it, it lasts for years. Ideal for pieces you want to wear on repeat.

3. Eco-friendly: Linen production requires fewer resources compared to fabrics like cotton, making it a great choice for those who want to make more sustainable fashion decisions.

Why We Chose a Linen-Viscose Blend

As much as we love linen, we wanted to enhance its benefits while addressing some of its drawbacks. Enter the linen-viscose blend—a match made in fabric heaven. Here’s why:

1. Instant Softness: Pure linen usually takes a few washes to soften, but by blending it with viscose, you get that buttery-soft feel right from the first wear. It’s like slipping into your favourite outfit, minus the wait.

2. Less Wrinkling: Linen tends to wrinkle and crease easily, but by blending it with soft, malleable viscose, we’ve significantly reduced this issue. The viscose adds flexibility, helping to minimise creasing, so you can enjoy that classic linen look without needing to iron every time—a quick steam will do the trick.

3. Greater Durability: While linen is already durable, the addition of viscose enhances its longevity. Terra’s linen-blend pieces retain their shape and softness over time, resisting the wear and tear that comes from frequent use and washing.

4. Low Maintenance: 100% linen can be fussy, with special washing and drying instructions. Not so with the linen-viscose blend—it’s easier to care for, less shrinking, fewer wrinkles, and no need for constant attention. Just wash, wear, repeat, but don't forget to read the care label!
